"At peace with the silence, comforted by it, nurtured by it." So often I struggle to get there. Your essay will make it a bit easier. Can't wait for fishing season, and now the sometimes silence of it all.

I guess we can go home again without deep regret, and find that we've grown. Very moving story.

Yes, our values change. I guess that's one of the good things about getting older. Your story captures it.
Thanks so much,

Gary, this is good stuff! I commend you for investing in Jack, please keep us posted. I suspect you'll both learn a great deal. It does make you wonder, what would it be like if fly rods were as popular with today's kids as video games.

Thanks for sharing this - it really hit some tender spots. My father wore, and I now have a coat that looks identical to this one. He was my hero, but died 23 years ago when I was 17. I still return to the place of my birth (Louisiana) as often as I can, and fish with my brother on the waters our father taught us to love. When hunting season comes my brother visits my home in Georgia, again renewing the bonds my father created and nurtured so many years ago.

Hmmm. I must wonder if we've read the same book. I've read most of the authors mentioned above & found Mr. Kadish's book on par (or more enjoyable) than most. "The River Why", once my favorite fly fishing novel gave way to "The Fly Caster Who Tried Too Make Peace With the World". Since I've lived in both places these novels "took place"... it was easy for me to visualize the scenes... Kadish's stood out with a bit more realism. To compare Randy Kadish's writing with Harry Middleton's is quite the compliment... but the way it's stated above makes it seem like a fault somehow.
Well, we all know every one's got their own opinion... do yourself a favor, read the book, I bet you won't be disappointed... just don't prejudge.
